I came across an interesting topic this morning while looking at the news. Apparently according to this article a Russian company is planning on releasing a smartphone which has a 2nd e-ink screen. The rumour is that it will be released at some point in 2013 on a 4G Android.
While this is not a new idea, it’s great know that plans like these are being put into action. So what could the second screen be used for? A couple of things pop to mind.
- In recent years social media has exploded, this begs the question, could it be used for all your social networking needs such as linked in, Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest in a relatively low power setting?
- Another thing that comes to mind is that it could show basic but sometimes essential smartphone functions such as time, date, voice mail, and unread messages. This will free up the other screen to work on the memory and battery heavy web browsing, apps and much more.
I’m not sure if it will be a successful attempt from Yota at trying to break in to the smartphone market from a company that usually makes routers and modems. Time will tell, and the competition sure is stiff but with a unique design idea, they could well grab a share of the mobile market.
